This is a question many parents ask us as their child is approaching school age. Please remember children develop at different rates so talk to one of our teachers if you have concerns or questions about your child’s development.

Children grow towards readiness for reading at different rates which vary widely in their abilities, skills and understanding.  

• What a book is?

• Know that a book contains words and pictures

• Know that words are what are read

• Know that a book has a beginning, an end, a back and a front

• Understand that reading is done from left to right, top to bottom

• Understand that a printed word represents one spoken word

• Children need to learn to love and care for books in order to want to read

• Children have enough vocabulary to express what they want to say
